WinRAR 5 is the latest version of the compression software perceived by many computer users to be one of the world's best archivers and archive managers.
WinRAR uses its own RAR format, but also fully supports operations on ZIP files, can handle decompression of CAB, ARJ, LZH, ACE, TAR, GZip, UUE, ISO, BZIP2, Z and 7-Zip archives, converts files to TGZ, creates self-extracting archives, as well as lets users create multivolume ones, encrypt files and protect them with passwords.
Highly sophisticated, original compression algorithm, optimized for text, audio and graphic files, is among the most highlighted features of WinRAR. New users can take advantage of the built in wizard, which facilitates the process of creating archives. WinRAR is also able to handle large archives, which is useful when working on really big files.
New RAR5 format can now create larger dictionaries of up to 1 GB in the 64-bit version of WinRAR and 256 MB in the 32-bit version and both can unpack archives with any dictionary size, including 1 GB. Default dictionary size is 32 MB, typically resulting in higher compression ratio and lower speed than RAR 4.x 4 MB. Apart from achieving smaller file sizes, RAR5 is able to utilize several CPU cores for decompression, offers stronger encryption (algorithm is changed from AES-128 to AES-256 in CBC mode), allows to detect most of wrong passwords without necessity to unpack the entire file or to utilize 256 bit length BLAKE2sp hash. Many changes were also introduced to protect archives from being damaged.
Though many features were added, some were removed in WinRAR5. This happened to authenticity verification for example and file comments are not supported anymore as well.
